Wrinkles a Big Problem
-for Some Women
The truth is that wrinkles may not be
inevitable. Some women have very few of them. Others have a lot.
Wrinkles are something that most women expect to have, unless they have cosmetic
surgery or some other procedure to smooth them out.
Partly by noting the differences between the two groups of women, it has been
possible for scientists to determine the causes of wrinkles. Once you know what causes something, it is easier to
develop a solution. Here you will learn about the causes of and the solutions for wrinkles.
Cause #1: Excessive Sun Exposure
Excessive sun exposure is often mentioned as the number one cause of wrinkles.
Actually, it is not the sun, but the free radical activity stimulated by UV radiation from the sun.
Free radical molecules are naturally present in the skin. They do very little
damage unless they become excited. UV radiation excites them.
Cause #2: Lack of Antioxidants
Antioxidants have the ability to neutralize free radicals before they can do any
damage. Dermatological researchers have found that older skin contains fewer antioxidants than younger skin. For
example, the skin contains less superoxide dismutase (SOD) and less glutathione.
When there are not enough antioxidants around to neutralize free radicals, they
damage the skin’s cells, fibers and DNA strands. When new skin cells are produced, they are not exactly like they
Free radicals also contribute to inflammation, which damages and degrades the
skin’s elastic fibers, leading to sagging skin. Sagging skin is more wrinkled in appearance.
Cause #3: Dry Skin
When the skin is moist, it is firmer. The cells are “plump”. When the skin is dry,
it looks more wrinkled and chronically dry skin is an identified cause of wrinkle formation.
Cause #4: Decrease in the Skin Cell Turnover Rate
As we age, there is a decrease in certain biological processes. Skin rejuvenation
is one of the processes affected. When we are young, the skin’s stem cells produce thousands of new cells per day.
That rate declines significantly with age.
Cause #5: Decreased Skin Firmness
When the skin is firm, it is naturally less wrinkled. If the skin starts to sag,
all sorts of wrinkles can appear. The decrease in skin firmness that is experienced with age has to do with
decreased production of collagen and elastin, as well as lower levels of the skin’s hyaluronic acid.
You should know that some manufacturers of anti-aging creams capitalize on your
knowledge of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid by including them as ingredients in the cream. Those ingredients
do not work. The molecules are too large for the skin to absorb them. There are ingredients that do work and those
are the ultimate wrinkle solution.
The Solutions for
Even though there are four causes, you don’t really need four solutions. What you
need is a good anti-aging cream that addresses all of the causes of wrinkles.
You can learn about specific ingredients that help to reverse sun damage, improve
the skin’s antioxidant content, heal dry skin, stimulate skin cell production and improve skin firmness in this
